The experience

A few days, well spent

Base yourself in the old village, then follow the coast north and south. The reserve links a series of breaks rather than a single beach, so a local surf report and tide check matter more than a fixed itinerary.

Suggested rhythm

Day 1: settle into the old town and check the coast. Day 2: visit Ribeira d’Ilhas and choose a suitable session with local advice. Day 3: explore the reserve coastline or take a rest day in Mafra. Keep a spare day for conditions.

Getting there & staying well

Stay in the old town for restaurants and walkable evenings, or near Ribeira d’Ilhas for easier coastal access. Lisbon Airport is the practical gateway; a rental car helps reach scattered breaks. Allow extra time on weekends.

Plan your budget

Request an itemised quote in the local currency. Include accommodation, airport transfers, activity fees, equipment hire, meals, taxes and travel insurance. Boat trips may add fuel, skipper and marina charges; golf may add caddie, cart and club hire. Flight prices are separate. This guide does not publish a live tariff.

Conditions & local etiquette

Check swell size, tide, wind, bottom type and exit points with local experts. Reef and powerful winter breaks are not suitable for inexperienced surfers. Respect the lineup, give priority correctly and avoid sensitive dunes or reef. Use lifeguarded beaches where available.
